Provincial Achievement Test Summary Report

YMCA Stay in School Program/McMan REAL Program
Provincial Achievement Test Summary Report
October 20, 2017

The charts, beginning on page 3, report YMCA Stay in School Program as well as McMan REAL Program student achievement on Provincial Achievement Tests.  Individual subjects are provided in historical detail on the pages that follow.  Both the YMCA Stay in School Program (YSIS) as well as the McMan REAL Program (McMan) are unique in both the supported educational environments that they provide as well as the unique student demographic that are enrolled in the programs.  Students in both programs are referred for enrollment by our district middle schools.  Students are referred to these two programs for a variety of reasons, the programs support academic and behavioral as well as emotional needs arising in the school environment.  Often our students have not had successful experiences in mainstream school environments, we seek to surround our students with supports that encourage success stemming from our philosophy of meeting kids where they are at in their developmental stages.  This allows us to begin the process of filling in the ‘learning gaps’ of our students.  From there we foster a growth mindset and often see our students develop a pride in their learning as well as their school program.  However Provincial Achievement Testing does not often reflect the student successes and growth that we see in the classroom, YSIS and McMan students are not commonly achieving at the same academic levels as their peers due to the described reasons and the resulting lagging skills.   Due to the nature of our enrollment students often come to our programs at various time throughout the school year.  This directly impacts our PAT achievement scores as students may have faced academic challenges such as poor attendance, large classroom settings and unsupported learning needs.  These are addressed by the programs and often see a marked improvement soon after enrollment however our Program PAT scores still reflect where and when a student enrolled in the YSIS or the McMan Programs.  The goal of the YSIS and McMan Programs is to foster a love of learning and to improve the students’ academic, social and emotional health, we are very good at that.  This is something that cannot be measured fairly through standardized testing.

Below is a summary of the YSIS as well as the McMan program celebrations, strategic planning for future and areas of continued success.

Program Highlights and Celebrations:

  • Consistent, excellent student participation
    • Y School had higher percentages of participation on all Provincial Achievement Tests in Grade 9 than either Medicine Hat Public School Division or the Province.
      • YSIS/McMan students in Grade 9 saw growth at the acceptable level in all subject areas, core curriculum as well as K&E scores
      • YSIS Grade 9 students showed improved performance at the standard of excellence in Mathematics.

        Areas Requiring Strategic Planning:

  • YSIS performed below the provincial average for Grade 9 core subjects at both the acceptable standard and the standard of excellence.
  • Grade 9 Provincial Achievement Test results in subject areas (English Language Arts, Science, Social) are an area of concern at both the acceptable standard and the standard of excellence, with the exception of some school growth (+2.3%) at the standard of excellence in Grade 9 Math.
  • Science 9 experienced the greatest decline of all achievement tests with 58.5% of students achieving acceptable standard, which is a decline from the previous year of 16.1%.
  • Social 9 experienced the greatest challenge of all achievement tests with 54.5% of students achieving acceptable standard, which is a decline of 6.0% from the previous year.
  • Y School Grade 9 students performed better than the overall MHPSD results at the level of standard of excellence in Math.
  • There was a decline at the acceptable standard level in Grade 9 Math.
  • We will continue to strive to improve results it the standards for all of our students in all subject areas.

Area of Continued Success

  • Our students feel comfortable writing the PATs in our programs.  They understand that the exams are a measure to improve our educational practice and not specifically a judgement on their learning
  • Identifying student needs for specialized supports to complete the PAT exams in an appropriate manner
  • The PAT exams are written in a familiar environment that fosters the students best work, we are not exposing them to a new environment to write an unfamiliar style of test
  • We continue to create calm test writing days, students are provided with food if hungry,  we provide options to stay hydrated and  students are discouraged from creating test competition with peers (speed of completion and/or grade)

PROVINCIAL ACHIEVEMENT TESTS

The great majority of Medicine Hat Public School Division students write the Provincial Achievement Tests.  Participation rates are helpful at understanding performance standards that are based on all students enrolled.  +/- Represents the difference in performance between the school’s 3 year average and the province’s 3 year average.
